I am on the exhibit hall floor at Apple’s WWDC and have a bit of a lull so figured I would post some notes.
Steve Jobs’ keynote was this morning. Unfortunately, exhibitors don’t have access. I followed along at MacMerc and on an AIM chat. Probably the biggest news was that Tiger is not coming until 1st half 2005 (seems like a big window). That is probably a good thing for us in the publishing industry since it gives our authors a chance to breathe and will leave some life for our Panther books. Tiger is supposed to be 64-bit which leaves some questions surrounding which hardware will be able to run it. May mean some G3s are left behind on Panther, but that is just mere conjecture at this point.
On the exhibit hall floor it was brisk following the keynote, but died down quickly after lunch. Folks seem to be very hard core into the sessions. Aaron Hillegass is running some sessions and his book Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X is drawing a lot of attention. I am a bit surprised at the level of interest in the Peachpit Apple Pro Training Series since this is a developer show and the books tend to be focused on hardware and existing applications. We’ll see what picks up as the show moves along.
That’s it for now. I will try and post more at the end of the day.
Jazzing up the site
I have been very frustrated by the boring template look of my site and it has kept me from blogging. Not only am I going to make a concerted effort to post more often (hopefully twice a day), but I am also working on improving the site. I have been reading Eric Meyer on CSS and have thus far been fairly pleased. It indicates that you should have at least a vague understanding of CSS and strong HTML skills, neither of which would I say I possess, but I have been able to work through and understand things fairly well. I think I am going to get bogged down in the aesthetic CSS which seems to be absent in the book. I do have More Eric Meyer on CSS and that may include more projects that are image, bell and whistle heavy. If anyone knows of any other books that are good let me know. I know that Molly Holzschlag’s Sams Teach Yourself Movable Type in 24 Hours includes coverage of modifying the templates, but I figured it would be good to learn CSS anyway.
In the meantime, I am debating whether I want to make some basic text and color tweaks to the current format just to add some personalization.
